Ancient Legends, Modern Myths
Tuesday January 7, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am PST
A lot of our current beliefs about the past are not based in science. For instance, a lot of people think that aliens built the pyramids, or that people practiced human sacrifice at Stonehenge. Both of these are popular myths because they make a much more exciting story than the truth! How can archaeologists help people understand more about the ancient world so that we can figure out what’s true?

Learn to Play Go!
Tuesday January 7, 2025 8:30am - 9:45am PST
Go (also known as Weiqi, Baduk and Igo) is an ancient Chinese strategy board game that has been around for at least 2000 years. It's often considered the oldest strategy game on the planet that's still being played in its original form (although Chess has also existed for thousands of years, the rules have changed over time).

Once upon a time, it was considered one of the four essential arts of a Chinese scholar and although it's not very well known in the Western world, it is still widely played in China, Japan and Korea today, with major tournaments often being broadcast on the news and online.

Go players often joke that you can learn the game in a few minutes but it may take you the rest of your life to master. Come to this class if you like deep strategy games and puzzles! I'd love to help you start on your Go journey!

Build a Prosthetic: Hands-On Biomedical Engineering Workshop
Tuesday January 7, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
Biomedical engineering (BME) is a field that blends engineering, science, and healthcare to solve some of the world's most pressing medical challenges. Biomedical engineers and scientists work on a variety of innovative projects, from developing medical devices to advancing technologies that improve lives. By applying creative problem-solving and engineering principles, biomedical engineers develop solutions that enhance health and well-being for individuals worldwide.

One area of BME that’s having a profound impact is the development of prosthetics -artificial limbs. Prosthetic limbs are critical solutions for people who have lost limbs due to accidents, illness, or congenital conditions, helping them regain mobility and independence. However, challenges still exist. Many prosthetics are heavy, difficult to personalize, and not as intuitive or functional as they could be. There’s a significant need for prosthetic designs that are lightweight, affordable, and capable of mimicking natural movement.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll dive into the engineering design process to build a prosthetic limb prototype. You'll explore how biomedical engineering is addressing these unmet needs and learn how innovations in prosthetics are improving the lives of many.

🔧 What You’ll Do:
  • Design and build a functional leg prosthetic prototype using everyday materials—no high-tech tools required!
  • Apply the engineering design process: brainstorm, build, test, and refine.
  • Discover the exciting intersection of science, creativity, and real-world problem-solving in biomedical engineering.
💡 Why Attend?
  • Gain hands-on STEM experience
  • Develop teamwork and critical thinking skills while tackling real-world challenges.
  • Create an innovative project to showcase your talents!

Controlled Chaos as a Storytelling Medium
Tuesday January 7, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
This session will introduce students to the joy of spontaneous storytelling. The class will begin with a brief discussion on the value and history of stories. Each student will then independently write a one-minute scene, entirely unconnected to the other students' scenes.

Afterward, the class will come together to collaboratively weave these chaotic scenes into a cohesive story. If time permits, the session will culminate in a performance of their new masterpiece.

This engaging session will help students develop their writing and storytelling skills, foster creativity, and exercise new ways of thinking—all while having a lot of fun.

Time To Save Santa (An Everyday Heroes TTPG)
Tuesday January 7, 2025 8:30am - 2:40pm PST
In Lumps of Coal, the heroes are an elite organization called to the North Pole by Mrs. Claus for an emergency mission of utmost importance to Christmas as a whole. The Krampus, one of Santa’s longest-standing “Naughties,” and his cronies have invaded one of Santa’s prized toy workshops and taken Santa hostage! Mrs. Claus needs the heroes to suit up, fill themselves with holiday spirit, take back the workshop, and save Santa. Krampus (and Jack Frost, the Grand Pumpkin, Todd, etc.) frequently enact schemes to weaken the merry might of Christmas, but these schemes are rarely as brazen as this one. There is no telling exactly what Krampus was thinking when he and his band of Naughty Listers emerged from their black-wrapped coal sack and laid fast siege to the workshop, but they were remarkably successful—and now it is up to Santa’s HELPERS to rectify this situation and make sure that the world can have a joyous Christmas this year!

Learn to Play Go!
Tuesday January 7, 2025 12:05pm - 1:20pm PST

Aside from purely just changes in public opinion, why do political parties shift their political stances over time? This session will be taught in a non-partisan fashion and is intended to teach students about the salience of political issues and how campaigning works from a calculated standpoint.

Enter the World of Roekron! Live Action Battles and Role Play
Wednesday January 8, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
Live Action Role Playing (LARP), players pretend to be someone else, living in a different time or place, and acting out events that might happen in that world. Many of these games involve battles, and so LARPers use safe, padded props that look like weapons to act out the combat. Unlike in a play where everyone has certain lines to say and the story is set, in LARP, the players each act out a certain person and make their own decisions for that person as the game evolves. Live Action Role Playing is a tremendous teaching tool and capable of dynamic, physically driven learning that transcends the usual boundaries of standard education. Due to the interactive, dramatic, hands on methods used in LARP, teaching is often effortless and fun. This class begins with basic battle training and rules of combat, followed by character creation and entry into the game world of Roekron, a game world continuously run for over two decades in the Bay Area and which currently has leagues all across the region with weekly and monthly meetups. Students will have a character at the end of this class that can be taken and used in any of the other Roekron League events they choose and may continue their story at future events if they wish.

Topics Covered:
- First Five Battle Rules
- Equipment Sets and Weapons
- Armor System of AV
- Basic Spell and Skill Types
- Overview of the Classes
- Character Species
- Character Backstory
- Alignments
- Flow of Events
- Playing a Monster or NPC
- Quests and Role Playing

Learn to Play Ukulele
Wednesday January 8, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
George Harrison wrote, “Everyone should have and play a ‘UKE.’ It’s so simple to carry with you and it is one instrument you can’t play and not laugh!” He carried his uke with him and gave away ukes to friends whenever he could. “Everyone I know who is into the ukulele is ‘crackers,’ so get yourself a few and enjoy yourselves,” he said. Good advice from a Beatle. This course offers an introduction to playing the ukulele. Geared toward both complete neophytes and experienced beginners, the course will teach students the basics of uke chords and strumming. A dozen or so chords will be covered as well as a few strum patterns and basic fingerpicking. Basic chart reading and rhythm studies will also be discussed. No experience required.

Understanding and Visualizing Word Embeddings for Modern AI Systems
Wednesday January 8, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
In this session we introduce the concept of word embeddings as a proxy for "meaning" and explain the intuition of how they play an important role in modern AI systems. We will begin by starting with a simpler example - colors - and show how we can use a simple 3-dimensional vector to represent colors. We will then show the intuition of distance between colors and how colors that are closer to each other in distance are also closer to each other visually. We will then connect the concept of vectors to represent colors to vector in a higher dimension space that can represent the "meaning" of words and then show how words that have similar meaning will be closer to each other.

Consent and Treatment of the Dead in Museums
Wednesday January 8, 2025 8:30am - 11:05am PST
Museums curate and display human remains in order to research the past and to educate the public. But it has come to light that many of the individuals on display might not have considered the museum to be their ideal final resting place. Adding in individual and indigenous voices problematises the concept of curation of human remains, but many archaeologists see us on a path we can’t retreat from without radically changing the field. Museum visitors also expect to see skeletons, and most find it part of their education - and often inspires them to go into research of medicine. Additionally, ancient cultures and modern society have radically different views of the afterlife, consent, and burial practices that are often at odds with each other. In this session we’ll learn about and debate these differing views.

Key questions: How can we as curators and archaeologists balance these different value systems? Do the dead have a voice, and what would they argue for? What are some of the arguments for and against keeping human remains on a case-by-case basis? How can we develop more complex arguments than "I wouldn't want that to happen to my body" when all of our ideas of our bodies are different?

- Magical Items and Money Cards
- Completing a Mission
- Transfer of Characters to other leagues

Coalition Building: How Politics Can Shape and Change Public Perception
Wednesday January 8, 2025 9:50am - 11:05am PST
I will talk about why there is often a shift which states are "swing states" over time, as well as how politicians choose certain topics & themes to focus on in their campaigns based on what is politically viable. Example questions include: How did Barack Obama carry several states that are now considered strongly Republican? Aside from purely just changes in public opinion, why do political parties shift their political stances over time? This session will be taught in a non-partisan fashion and is intended to teach students about the salience of political issues and how campaigning works from a calculated standpoint.

Did Baseball Save Us? The Negro Leagues, Japanese Incarceration, and Sports and Social Justice in America
Wednesday January 8, 2025 12:05pm - 1:20pm PST
You may have heard about Jackie Robinson and his breaking of the color barrier in baseball, but have you heard the history of the Negro Leagues and how baseball was segregated in the first place? Can you name some women baseball players who were also Negro League stars (yes, they could play baseball in the Negro Leagues even if not for Major League Baseball)? Did you know that baseball was one of the incarceration camp sports for Japanese Americans during World War II?

If these questions sound interesting and you'd like to learn more, please come join a discussion about the history of baseball in America that you may not have heard before, focusing on the Negro Leagues and baseball in the wartime incarceration camps. We'll be using books that involve primary sources to build our knowledge of this part of our country's history, and think about how this impacts sports as we watch and understand them today, with a focus on sports as sources of resistance and joy in 2025 and beyond.

Good advice from a Beatle. This course offers an introduction to playing the ukulele. Geared toward both complete neophytes and experienced beginners, the course will teach students the basics of uke chords and strumming.
